Madam, – Michael McDowell told us that he was quitting politics on the night of losing the count at the RDS in the May 2007 general election. Why can’t he keep his word? – Yours,
KEITH NOLAN,
Carrick-on-Shannon,
Co Leitrim.
Madam, – I’m not sure which is more revealing about the flaws in the Irish character. That someone like Michael McDowell, who was at the heart of everything that went on in government since 1997, and is as guilty as every one else who sat around a cabinet table since 1997, and who no doubt thoroughly relished implementing the policy decisions that caused the mess the country now faces, having been rejected for the third time by the electorate is again contemplating resurrecting his political career. Or that the media give publicity (Front page, July 30th) to his musings and never ask him to account for the decisions he made in office or ask how he justifies the pensions he bleeds from the taxpayer on top of his excessive legal income. Or, that there could conceivably be people who would vote for him again.
Exactly how low does the country need to sink before people link who they vote for and the sort of government they get – or is it that the voters of Dublin South East has been left untouched by the recession and are so out of touch with reality that they can be so stupid. What next? Bertie Ahern for President! – Yours, etc,
