Sir, - As an old boy of Methodist College, Belfast ("Methody"), I would like to commend the decision by the school authorities to allow a visit by the North's Education Minister, Mr Martin McGuinness. As Protestants we must live with present reality, not always keep looking back at the attitudes of 1912 or the days of the former Stormont Parliament.

When I was a pupil at "Methody" in the 1930s there was, to my knowledge, not a single Catholic pupil. Even so, I never heard a teacher express anti-Catholic sentiments or political opinions of any kind. I understand that for some years the school has had a considerable percentage of Catholic pupils. Why not? They will get a good education there.

I may add that I do not support Sinn Fein and that I regard all paramilitary groups with abhorrence. Liberal Ulster Protestants must say so to avoid being called "traitors" by extreme Unionist factions. - Yours, etc., Robert Greacen,

(Member of Aosdana), Tritonville Close, Dublin 4.
