Marking The Millennium
Sir, - In Rio de Janeiro, millions partied on the streets. In Dublin, city-centre streets were shuttered canyons. In Paris the Eiffel Tower was illuminated in pyrotechnic splendour. In Dublin, the fireworks display was invisible from the Liffey quays. In London the Tube ran for free all night. In Dublin, half the bus routes had no service on New Year's Eve.
Next time there is a major celebration, can we please ask the Brazilians, French, English - or indeed anyone else - to organise the party for us? - Yours, etc.,
Deryck Fay, South Great George's Street, Dublin 2.
