LOST AT SEA

Sir, My father lost his brother, who was only 17 years of age, when HMS Glorious was sunk along with HMS Ardent and HMS Acasta on June 8th, 1940. Only 43 survived the Glorious and three from the destroyers a total loss of 1,515 men.

The family has never been satisfied with the official explanation from the British Government especially since the nearest ship HMS Devonshire which happened to be evacuating the Norwegian Royal family and Government was not supposed to understand the signal from the Glorious asking for assistance. The Devonshire broke radio silence the next day 17 hours later when she was clear and her celebrities were safe.

I wonder if any Irishmen who served in the Royal Navy remember this incident, particularly signal ratings from HMS Devonshire. I would he most grateful if you could publish this letter. Yours, etc.,
