Losing a sporting hero

Sir, – People of Ireland, hold your heads high, you have lost one of your sons – and so have we here in Australia

Sir, – People of Ireland, hold your heads high, you have lost one of your sons – and so have we here in Australia. Jim Stynes lost his three-year battle with cancer, at the age of just 45 (Sport, March 20th). Every generation seems to produce a hero, and Jim Stynes was in every sense of the word a hero. He was an outstanding footballer and sportsman, a great motivator, and touched the lives of many people with his marvellous spirit, capability and tenacity. His name and his image will be loved for many years in this country.

As a gesture to his greatness the Victorian Government have offered a state funeral to Jim’s family. Be proud Ireland, you sure know how to produce them! – Yours, etc,

ROBIN SHANNON,
