Sir, - Your reports on P.G. Wodehouse's wartime broadcasts from Berlin (The Irish Times, September 18th) stated that Stephen Joyce (Lord Haw-Haw) was Irishborn. This is incorrect. Stephen Joyce was born in Brooklyn and remained an American citizen all his life (although he did have a British passport). In 1914, when he was seven, his family moved to Galway; they emigrated to England in 1922.
Unfortunately for him, his American citizenship was not enough to save him from being hanged for treason in 1946. He is buried in Galway. - Yours, etc.,
John Devlin, Erne Terrace, Baile Atha Cliath 2.
