A chara, – Former Fine Gael leader Alan Dukes (Home News, August 17th) urged the Government not to allow the referendum campaign to be hijacked by lies again. I agree with his sentiments, but unfortunately it is too late.
Already the Fianna Fáil-led administration and its political and business allies are busy peddling the falsehood that they have secured legal guarantees that address voters’ concerns in areas such as neutrality. The guarantees are nothing more than political promises from discredited politicians and bureaucrats and are as worthless as the paper they are written on.
I am sure Mr Dukes must be distraught that they have ignored his advice and have already stooped to deliberately misleading the public in order to secure their vote. But then again, should anyone be surprised at the depths Fianna Fáil politicians will stoop to in order to secure a person’s vote? – Is mise,

Madam, – I noted a letter (Jim Mc Hale, August 6th) which called for “real leadership” on the Yes side. Mr McHale must forget about waiting for the political parties to act, as they were of no assistance the last time round. He has clearly failed to notice the leadership which is being demonstrated by the non-political groups such as, Ireland for Europe, Generation Yes, Lawyers for Europe, and Women for Europe. Leadership is, and must come from ordinary citizens to ensure this treaty is passed. Ask not what your country can do for you, but what can you do for your country. – Yours, etc,
