Las Vegas meets Two-Mile-Borris

Madam, – The developers of the casino in Tipperary have made comparisons between their project and the casino in Monaco

Madam, – The developers of the casino in Tipperary have made comparisons between their project and the casino in Monaco. I do not know where they propose to put the marina but I am looking forward to the Two-Mile-Borris grand prix. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Let’s take the personalities out of the Tipperary project debate. The fact is that our legislation is over 50 years out of date, and we are being left behind internationally when it comes to the gaming industry. Let’s not forget the courage of the people proposing and financing this project. – Yours, etc,

JJ WOODS,

Madam, – Some words of caution to casino builders in Two-Mile-Borris’s fields of dreams: unlike the movies – if you build it, they may not come.

Yours, etc,

Madam, — As our present leadership seems to consider governance by referendum a good way to move forward, may we have a vote on this bizarre plan to build a casino in the lush green fields of Tipperary? — Yours etc,

Madam, – The construction of a replica of the White House in Two-Mile-Borris might be the perfect structure to position in the middle of the Irish countryside, contrary to Ian Hickey’s view (June 14th). The White House was designed by an Irishman, James Hoban, from Cuffesgrange, Co Kilkenny (about 15 miles away from Two-Mile-Borris).

Madam, – I read with some bemusement Ian Hickey’s letter (June 14th) regarding the idea of building a replica of the White House in Ireland. While I am inclined to agree that it may be an eyesore unless properly planned, I do take issue with his symbolism. I have always seen the White House as representing freedom and self-determination. Mr Hickey seems disturbed by the “capitalist” aspect. Perhaps a replica of the Kremlin or the People’s Meeting Hall would be in order? – Yours, etc,

Madam, – To hear the cheerleaders of the proposed casino in Two-Mile-Borris, one would be convinced that it was Mr Quirke’s anonymous backers who were paying for the gaudy palatial white elephant. If, however, it does manage to ever get built, like all gambling establishments from Vegas to Monte Carlo, it will not be paid for with the winnings, but with the losses.

This is why a British study found that it is the community around the casino that quickly falls into a marked decline.

Only greed can be the driver of this project, as it does not stand up to any scrutiny on any level: moral, economic or aesthetic. The people of Tipp should be extremely concerned at these developments, as such degeneracy is a real danger to their communities’ coherence and prosperity. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – I very much doubt if a full-size replica of the White House would be much of a draw to the punters in Two-Mile-Borris. However, a full-size replica of the Moriarty tribunal rooms at Dublin Castle, together with audio guide aids of the proceedings and findings, might be a better bet. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Whatever about bringing “Crass Vegas” to Two-Mile Borris, does An Bord Pleanála feel we need another White House? Ireland already has two fine pieces of architecture in a similar mould to that in Washington.

It is widely acknowledged that James Hoban’s design for the original White House was modelled on Leinster House in Dublin, while our own Áras in the Phoenix Park (soon to have a new tenant) is just as impressive, if not more so.

If you want to get a real feel for the architecture in ancient Rome, you go there. You do not visit Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. – Yours, etc,
