Sir, - I was shocked to learn about conditions at Kilglass School in Co. Galway (January 7th). I wonder what kind of message the adult world gives the children of that school and other "seriously substandard" schools. Aren't their appalling conditions a sign of how much (or rather, how little) we value our children?

I feel ashamed to live in a country with politicians who, as yet, have done nothing to improve conditions for these children. I can only hope these children will be compassionate and forgiving of us, when the time comes for them to care for us as we get old and infirm. - Yours, etc.,

The thought has struck me that perhaps the Minister is more interested in getting re-elected than providing adequate accomodation for all schoolchildren.
