Madam, – Prof Liam Downey, speaking on Derek Mooney’s radio programme (May 14th), warned us that Irish agriculture is about to reach a point when it will not be able to feed its own population.

Due to increased global competition, hastened by proposed changes in the world trade agreements, the demise of this native industry can be averted if our policy-makers react swiftly to this frightening scenario. Or are they going to wait and see and again plead ignorance when the “inevitable” will happen? Prof Downey has blown the whistle, but who is listening? – Yours, etc,
