Sir, - Three weeks ago, I reported an illegal dumping incident to Meath County Council, I provided my name, address and detailed information on the location of the spot where the rubbish had been left.

After a week, I rang again, to be informed by the official I spoke to that the relevant staff were "snowed under" with work, and that it could be several more weeks before they could get around to contacting me.

What is particularly galling is that one of four neatly taped black plastic bags deposited at the roadside had burst, and a variety of items bearing names and addresses of individuals had spilled out. It is not too often that the sick creatures who carry on this kind of activity leave such incriminating evidence behind them. Between the weather and the dumpers allies, our burgeoning rodent population, it is doubtful if such evidence will survive very much longer - apart, that is from the items in my possession.

As Kevin Myers recently enquired, what is the point of having laws and sanctions if they are not applied? - Yours, etc.,
