Ireland and alcohol

Madam, - I am an emigrant of 30 years standing, and have a very sincere regard for the country and family that gave me birth. Reading all the letters you publish on the alcohol problems of present-day Ireland I smile.

Ireland has always had problems with the invisible spirit. Before Father Matthew, on via Brendan Behan, via Temple Bar, the G is good for you slogan will persist.

I offer a unique suggestion. Why not enact legislation to ensure that every bar, off-licence, supermarket display the following: "drinking alcohol to excess damages your health".

This may seem to many to be the essence of naiveté, but the young today are the parents of tomorrow, and education regarding the positive and negative aspects of alcohol is essential. - Yours, etc.,
