Madam, – Only in Ireland could the political class be so blind to the suffering of ordinary people that it takes the IMF to remind them of their responsibilities to the victims of Irish casino capitalism (Front page, June 25th).

Unfortunately, the whimpering of the starving Irish children of the formerly self-employed, who are currently denied all State supports, has yet to register in Pennsylvania Avenue, let alone in Leinster House where dogs and deer get more attention. Let us hope it is heard before the malnourished bodies of those innocent victims begin to pile up along the roadsides again. Last time, there was at least the workhouse to assist the formerly self-employed and their families; today, there is nothing.

What fine Republic? What equal cherishing? What social progress? Is history destined to show that a despotic foreign monarch did more to relieve the suffering of the destitute in Ireland than their own elected government ever did? – Yours, etc,
