Madam, - The HSE is now to promote the idea that patients should ask their nurses/doctors and consultants if they have washed their hands since seeing their last patient (The Irish Times, January 14th).

No doubt the person who came up with this idea will be given a bonus for such a brilliant plan. This will ensure that weak, sick elderly and dying patients can be blamed for the lack of hygiene in hospitals if they do not confront consultants and other intimidating medical personnel on whom they are for the moment totally dependent.

Only a genius could have come up with such a solution to the problem of our germ-filled hospitals. - Yours, etc,
