Sir, - I delivered three of my four children at home with the expert services of a domiciliary midwife and I was delighted with the judgment in favour of domiciliary midwife Ann O Ceallaigh last week.
I am also a registered general nurse and I now wonder what my governing body, An Bord Altranais, will do to pay their legal bill reported to be in excess of £1.5 million? I hope they will not look to increase my annual registration fee to meet these costs. I have no intention of bailing them out.
In my opinion, the Bord should be advocating and supporting the autonomy of midwives, who are courageous enough to operate outside the medical model of obstetric-led birth. Instead they strive to undermine this very profession. - Yours, etc.,
Bridin O'Connor, Lucan, Co Dublin.
