Guantánamo detainees

Madam, – I wonder if the Government has lost the run of itself in agreeing to take in some of the Guantanamo detainees.

Madam, – I wonder if the Government has lost the run of itself in agreeing to take in some of the Guantanamo detainees.

Surely this is taking political correctness too far? Why should we, in a country just coming to terms with immigration and with no history of imperialism or any trace of a Muslim legacy, offer our shores to unknowns?

The United States itself should house and resettle the detainees, as it imprisoned them in the first place. And if they have all been exonerated, why is the US government seeking other countries to take them in? Why not return them to their own homelands? Surely, that would be best. And what of it, if they’re from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq or even Saudi Arabia – sure aren’t those countries friends of the US?

It seems to me that this decision by the Government indicates yet again how they are incapable of thinking through a policy. There are too many unknowns and too few guarantees for a small country like our own to even consider this foolish plan. – Yours, etc,
