Sir, - We are exhorted to exercise more Government health experts are unanimous in advising us to walk everyday, to improve our health. Yet they do nothing to make the country roads safer to walk on.

Until four or five years ago, the smaller roads were comparatively safe to travel by foot - with a dog or on a horse. Now, due to better drive and passenger safety, more powerful engines and motor car advertisements on television eulogising acceleration and speed in out of the way places on winding roads, even bohereens have become frightening places for anyone not surrounded by tin.

Jersey is introducing green roads, where the maximum speed limit is 15 mph. It takes very little to calm motor traffic down (compared to a mile of motorway) and force selfish drivers to realise that the first and most important rule of the road is consideration for other users, whether they are in a car or not. Yours, etc.
