Getting a taste for veganism

Sir, – The debate on veganism, would serve our society well were it be viewed in terms of a possible contribution to our national financial crisis.

The foundation of vegetarian living, veganism (non-dairy vegetarian) and herbalist remedies is very simple; living with nature in accordance to the way the human body has been designed by nature. Some animals on planet Earth are carnivores (meat eaters) the rest are omnivores. Humans fall into the second grouping, our basic body chemistry and digestive system including colon length were not designed for meat or dairy consumption.  Present day diets of junk food, fizzy drinks, alcohol, tea, coffee, and a dollop of cigarettes all work against nature’s design of the human body.

Often overlooked in the debate is the scientific fact that the human body gets 80 per cent of its necessary energy requirements from fresh air, with only 20 per cent from food intake. And two- thirds of the energy from food is used to break down the consumed matter and dispose of it.  Thus only 7 per cent of required net energy is food based!

As a practising vegetarian and aspiring vegan, may I recommend the lifestyle to everyone. After a few months of absence, there is no craving for the tea, coffee, fish and chips, chemical based shaving foam or even a glass of “whatever you are having yourself”.

Every year as a State we spend billions of borrowed euros importing the above list of negatives, then spend another fortune on health services treating many avoidable diseases. Not exactly the way any smart economy would be designed!

While we now wonder why smoking was not banned from public meeting places many years sooner, we will one day wonder why our political leaders did not promote the natural way of living into main stream health and welfare economics.  At least one benefit of our bankrupt economy is that we can no longer financially afford to ignore it. – Yours, etc,
