Garda Síochána and breath tests

Sir, – The Garda Representative Association position with respect to false breath-tests appears to be that its members were acting under duress and simply following orders.

First, as a representative body with direct ministerial access, why did the GRA not deal with what were clearly illegal orders?

Second, did its members have the capacity to make a moral choice in relation to their actions?

The principle of ethical reciprocity demands that those who enjoy rights must also protect the rights of others. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – So that’s why the gardaí were blowing into the breathalysers.

They were trying to inflate the numbers! – Yours, etc,

P WALSH,
