Madam, - Sunny days have come at last and, please God, may the weather continue to be good for many weeks to come. Yet my heart goes out to people in uniform as they sweat from the heat in midday sun in heavy winter uniforms.
In Holland some years ago we spoke to two Dutch policewomen who were in summer gear and not wearing police hats. In other European countries the police not only wear summer uniforms but sometimes even shorts. So we would ask the Minister for Justice to consider similar gear for the Garda Síochána, and replace the present Garda hat with the baseball cap worn in some other countries.
The constant wearing of those heavy Garda hats in the summer cause a lot of sweating on the head, leading to greasy hair and baldness. We would also suggest the same thing for traffic wardens and postmen/women, who also have to wear winter uniforms in the summer. - Yours, etc,
