Gardaí left to their own devices?

Sir, – What a marvellously progressive organisation An Garda Síochána is, clearly at the forefront of modern user experience and technology trends by embracing the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend, where workers use personal devices for work.

Recently, I heard how members of both the Garda Representative Association and Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors would no longer continue to use their personal smart phones and laptops in the course of their duty as a way of communicating their displeasure at Government policy.

Now would be a good time for these same organisations to explain to the public and to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner what BYOD best practices, guidelines and technological solutions are in place to safeguard sensitive data that was used on these devices and under what policy the information was accessed and shared in the first place.

I am sure many private sector businesses too, now investing heavily in securing information used by their employees across on corporate and personal devices would be interested to learn from such BYOD thought leaders. – Yours, etc,
