Sir, - It is becoming increasingly obvious that in Ireland we are unable to converse without using an obscene four letter word in practically every second sentence. Unfortunately, the use of this word is not limited to male adults alone. Young girls, too seem to think that the use of obscene language makes them appear more emancipated.

Degenerate speech is a clear indication of an overall decline in moral behaviour and, indeed, of family values in general. The increasing number of marriage breakdowns is a further indication of the deterioration in our society.

Could not our teachers, clergy and parents join forces and highlight this ugly phenomenon? As the saying goes: where there is a will, there is a way. At times, however, I feel that this will is no longer present in Irish society.
