Sir, – It seems ironic that, just as the news breaks that a deal has been achieved that helps to alleviate the debt burden inflicted on us by the previous government, and as information emerges about Irish Nationwide that shows just the sort of greed and indiscipline that fuelled the so-called Celtic tiger, the Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI opinion poll shows that Fianna Fáil is once again the most popular political party in Ireland (Front page, February 9th).

This would suggest that the people of Ireland have exactly the political system that we want: namely 15 years of stroke politics and cronyism to allow us all the chance to make a quick buck (especially the “cute hoors” in the know), followed by a shortish period of austerity to tidy up the mess, after which time we dump those who tried to fix the system and get back to the good time Charlies (or Berties) as quick as we can.

Put me down for two tickets for the Galway Races tent next year!! – Yours, etc,
