Sir, - I am delighted that Sr Barbara Raftery (April 6th) should highlight the obstructionist role played by the Indonesian government in the terrifying famine raging in that country.

The generous Irish public deserves to be told that in many instances, the behaviour of Third World governments make it impossible for aid agencies, however well intentioned, to alleviate suffering. One still harbours vivid memories of the obstacles placed in the path of the aid effort by the Ethiopian government during that traumatic famine of 1984-1985.

It behoves the international community to find the strength of purpose and courage to confront corrupt governments and insist that life-saving aid be allowed to flow to those in greatest need. - Yours, etc.,
