Sir, - In relation to the letter (August 16th) regarding English accents being re dubbed for Irish television, I have to agree with the confusion of the author.

Since moving from Limerick to Dublin in 85, I have observed that in relation to accents, the lower class aspire to the middle class, the middle class aspire to the upper class and the upper class aspire to the English. "Dorth speak", as Kevin Myers called it, is alive and well and living in Ireland.

So, I can only assure that redubbing English commercials with Irish accents is a move by Bord na nGaeilge to preserve our national accent. I think I'm going to have to go away and lie down.
