Sir, - I can understand the annoyance of Noel Ahern, TD at the Tanaiste's post-Christmas outburst on taxis and pubs (The Irish Times, January 4th). Her remarks must have aroused ire in the breasts of Fianna Fail publicans - a considerable body of men and women.
If it is any consolation to Mr Ahern, Fianna Fail publicans and taxi-licence owners, I interpreted Mary Harney's views on taxis and pubs not as a statement of political purpose but rather as expressing the opinion of the disgruntled punter. I do not know what kind of Christmas the Taniste had, but who among us has not, at Christmas time, set off to party, have a few drinks or whatever, found the evening a bit of a disappointment and to crown it all couldn't get a taxi home. It's very understandable in those circumstances to have a bit of a rant.
If Mr Harney actually wants to do something to improve the taxi situation, why doesn't she press the Taoiseach to produce an early and concrete result from his taxi forum? - Yours, etc., John White,
Lakelands Close, Stillorgan, Co Dublin.
