Madam, - David O'Brien (April 29th) accuses the media of "a latent prejudice against colour" in its coverage of the US presidential election campaign. Whatever about the media, he himself certainly has strong views.

He says it would be "a travesty of justice for a person of such dubious character" as Senator Clinton "to be returned to the White House". He adds that "another Clinton era is just too awful to contemplate".

I take a different view of the media coverage of the contest. Women are a majority in all democracies yet have derisory political representation in most. A woman candidate, therefore, raises fundamental issues about representative democracy.

Far from the "latent prejudice against colour" that David O'Brien sees, I see the patriarchy continuing to spout venom about Hillary Clinton because she is the first woman to have a chance to fill the most powerful political post in the world. - Yours, etc,
