Sir, - I have read with interest the comments made by a number of people in the arts world in support of Mr Declan McGonagle. I do not doubt their sincerity, but to suggest that, just because one has supposedly done a good job, one should somehow be allowed to keep this job seemingly ad infinitum is a little rich. I would also question the success of the IMMA during Mr McGonagle's 10-year tenure. I have found the permanent collection to be uninspiring and exhibitions such as the current "Shifting Grounds" to be somewhat disappointing. I should emphasise that I do not know Mr McGonagle and these comments are made purely on the basis of being a reasonably frequent visitor to the IMMA. I think it's time for a change of direction and director. - Yours, etc.,
Stephen Ryan, Reuben Avenue, Dublin 8.
