The efforts by the people of Derry and other areas, to resolve the issue of contentious marches deserves our praise and thanks. A sign of relief was audible throughout the country that last weekend (August 10th-11th) did not spark another descent into nightmare.
As well as those directly involved in trying to get agreement worked out, I feel that the role of those who went as observers also deserves acknowledgement. The TDs, MEPs and Senators from Fianna Fail, the Labour Party and the Green Party as well as those from other organisations played an important part in cooling the situation. Their presence was a reminder that there is still great goodwill and support for all, the people of the north to work out their differences.
At a time when the peace process is in jeopardy the courage and political responsibility demonstrated by them sent a message to Northern Ireland saying you are not alone. I want to thank them for taking risks for peace. Turning away from difficult situations may be the east option but it contributes nothing. Yours, etc., Fitzroy Avenue, Drumcondra, Dublin 3.
