Madam, - Does anyone seriously believe that if Ireland fails to ratify the Lisbon Treaty the concordat can't be enacted? If they do, they're living in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

This treaty will become law with or without the assent of the Irish electorate; let there be no doubt about that. I doubt if even one Government Minister would have the temerity to suggest otherwise.

So why bother holding a superfluous referendum? It all seems like a pretty futile exercise to me.
