Sir,- Eve White writes (November 26th): "Why are there so many accidents and deaths due to driving under the influence of drink? I'll tell you why: the authorities don't really care."

This is obviously true - but why don't they care? Because the general population doesn't care. Deaths on the road are viewed as an unfathomable visitation of providence; measures to control the slaughter are viewed as a bureaucratic interference with the rights of the individual. When the voters demand safe roads, they will get them. - Yours, etc.,
