Sir, - I am watching the evening news on television and yet another report of tragic deaths on the road has prompted me to write.
I believe the authorities are putting a lot of thought and effort into methods to reduce this carnage. However, we need to communicate with drivers at the wheel and in this respect there is one area that might perhaps be better exploited.
I refer to public service broadcasting. Specifically, I mean asking national and local radio stations to issue regular messages to drivers, such as: "are you driving too fast?"; "what's the road like?"; "what's the hurry?"; "if you're tired or angry, pull in for a few minutes"; or "better late than never".
Messages such as these broadcast every few minutes (by familiar voices, perhaps) might help. - Yours, etc.,
