Cycling In Dublin

Sir, - I lived in Dublin for the past two years and cycled its streets daily. The Dublin Corporation should be encouraged to pursue the option of banning lorry traffic in the city centre "Calls for restrictions on heavy trucks in Dublin" (The Irish Times October 29th). It is laughable to believe that painting a red cycle lane on the side of the street actually ensures the safety of cyclists. If streets were widened and then cycle lanes were added, perhaps that would improve conditions. But as it stands, all the new cycle lanes in the city centre have accomplished is to give cyclists a false sense of security. As long as there are large vehicles speeding down narrow streets, cyclists will be in danger.- Yours, etc.,
