A chara, – As a lifelong walker and cyclist, I was glad to read in Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar’s letter (September 18th) that he “hopes to achieve as many (cycle and walkways) as we can, as soon as we can with the resources available”. Presumably, the “we” refers to the Government.
May I suggest that he immediately consults his Labour Party colleagues. Mr Quinn’s Bill, when in opposition, to secure reasonable and responsible access to the countryside for walkers, would go a long way to achieve Mr Varadkar’s objective, and benefit the nation. An All-Party Oireachtas Committee has already reported (2004) that no constitutional amendment is necessary to secure a balance between the rights of individual landowners and the common good. – Is mise,
