Madam, – Is there no end to the verbal and intellectual gymnastics to be employed to defend the greed merchants’ vulgar ideology that has sent the sky falling in on all of us? I refer to John Stafford’s attempt (February 10th) to justify the savage cutting of the minimum wage by claiming that it is a source of attraction for “low paid”workers from all over Europe. What “jobs” are Mr Stafford talking about? Has he not noticed yet that we have 450,000 unemployed? But the suggestion that the way to solve any problem is to attack the most vulnerable is as crass as it is dangerous.
What we need to do more that anything else in this crisis is to share what we have as fairly as possible, not send many from poverty to penury to safeguard the life of luxury of the few. – Yours, etc,
