Sir, - Co-operation Ireland (formerly Co-operation North) was delighted to read of the positive experience of cross-Border exchanges organised under our auspices as reported by Mr Brian Duffy, principal of the High School, Rathgar (September 15th).
The support from the US and Irish governments to which he refers will enable Co-operation Ireland to bring a new dimension to our exchange work by highlighting the concept of citizenship and civic responsibility on the island of Ireland, and by focusing young people's thoughts on how they can contribute to the development of their own community. As part of the project (to be developed in 1999) they will also have to consider how those from a different identity view the same issues. This process will lead to increased understanding and respect for those of another identity.
Although the recent welcome Agreement provides a framework for moving forward, there is still much work to be done to increase understanding and respect between individuals and communities who still fear and mistrust the other. Co-operation Ireland has a key role to play in helping make peace work and we are determined to do so through new projects such as this citizenship project, in addition to our ongoing established programmes. - Yours, etc.,
Tony Kennedy,
Chief Executive,
