Madam, - The news that motorists disqualified in Northern Ireland are to be banned in the Republic (and visa versa) from next April is to be welcomed.

What is now required is the introduction of long overdue reforms in the area of driver training. The average waiting time for a driving test in the Republic is still excessive and the flaws in the provisional licensing system are evident. One can only hope that the road safety strategy due to be published by the Road Safety Authority addresses this important issue effectively. - Yours, etc,
