Madam, – Michael Horgan (July 17th) seems to belong to the “we are all to blame” brigade who argue that because “we elected this Government” we have no right to hold it to account for nearly bankrupting the country. In fact, holding it to account would amount to, in Mr Horgan’s words, “retribution”.

Each member of the Government has a battalion of taxpayer- funded spin-doctors to put forward propaganda on their behalf. In this democracy all the rest of us have is our own right to criticise. It is, therefore, not “retribution” if we exercise that right to criticise the failures of those whom we elect to high office. That right is what differentiates us from the people who live in dictatorships. – Yours, etc,
