Sir, - Your reporting of the Kosovo situation has demonstrated that NATO bombing cannot avoid civilian casualties. Also, the use of radioactive uranium weapons and time delay cluster bombs - which equal the land mines so piously condemned after Diana's death - plus the deliberate murder of civilians in the bombing of Belgrade TV increasingly exposed NATO's inhumanity. The situation began to resemble Vietnam, where only committed and often heroic media reporting finally exposed the propaganda of the American military spokesmen in their diversionary demonising of Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Cong, however many their crimes.
It is notable that 96 per cent of Greeks who, after all, live beside the war zone condemn NATO bombing, and a majority would indict Clinton rather than Milosevic for war crimes. How in justice could we happily allow routine visits by American warships armed with civilian-killing cruise missiles, as took place in Cobh, while refusing to even play football with the Yugoslavs? Why are our politicians so blindly one-sided? The Government stance defies both logic and morality. - Yours, etc., Jamie Dixon,
High Street, Cork.
