Sir, - It may very well be that Michael Collins was a murderer. It may even be that he was systematic in this, but "man who introduced systematic cold-blooded murder into this country" (An Irishman's Diary, August 27th)? I think not.

If memory serves there was a youngish English chap called Cromwell who had a pretty good system going himself.

Men, women and children (though not necessarily in that order) were asked to form an orderly line before being efficiently dispatched.

As a columnist with a deadline approaching and column inches to fill, Kevin Myers's need to exaggerate is understandable. As a historian, however, it is unforgivable. - Yours, etc.,
