Sir, - In his recent article on the level of car ownership in Ireland, Conor Faughman of the Automobile Association was correct to point out that our level of car ownership is below that of other European capitals. Rather than then exonerating the car as, the cause of our traffic problems, it would have been better to admit, the increasing difficulties we will have as our level of car ownership inexorably rises.
The solution to our transport problems will require difficult decisions to be taken, as space is taken away from private motorists to provide for bus lanes, cycle lanes and the Luas. The test of our politicians, the Automobile Association and the car lobby in general is whether they will support, or oppose, such changes in the allocation of road space. - Yours, etc.,
Dartry Park, Dublin 6.
