Madam, - Kevin Myers, in response to a letter criticising his article on media coverage of the Middle East, states that he assumes that the writer, Raymond Deane (June 15th), would have opposed the execution of Himmler, clearly suggesting that such a position would be a form of madness.

As someone who is opposed to the use of capital punishment in all cases I can certainly state that I would be opposed to such an execution. If you believe that murder is morally wrong then it follows that state-sanctioned murder is also morally wrong no matter what crime has been committed.

Mr Myers should also note that the people of this country voted to change our Constitution to ensure that the death penalty could not be used under any circumstances and that this hardly fits with his assertion that "virtually without exception we all approve of capital punishment". - Yours, etc,
