A chara, – It does not surprise me that An Bord Pleanála has refused planning permission for the Adare bypass (Home News, November 16th). The route proposed by Limerick County Council defies logic and commonsense, involving as it does going around three sides of a square.

A route across the north side of the village from the end of the new road at Fort Union to the north side of the deer park via Ardshanbally would entail the construction of a viaduct across the valley of the Maigue – about 500 metres. That would be expensive, but it would be less than half as long as the proposed route, and the number of landowners affected would be less than half.

Of course, with no money available, this matter is academic, but there is an undoubted need. As things are, traffic crawls at little more than walking pace for a mile, or more, on each side of the village, and pedestrians trying to cross the street here not uncommonly have to wait 10 minutes for a break in the traffic. – Yours, etc,

JAMES HARDEN,

Adare Village, Co Limerick.
