Bringing back the statues

Madam,   – Even the most optimistic of optimists must surely be wondering what news we are going to be hit with next to further hasten our free fall into global meltdown. Stock markets worldwide are tumbling, in turn affecting pensions, trade, jobs, welfare benefits and savings. The Government is in a serious dilemma over the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty, our banks and financial institutions are facing forced mergers with probable catastrophic results for bank workers, many people who purchased their homes are now faced with negative equity and emigration is once again one of our big exports as unemployment rockets.

Despite the scale of these problems which are besetting this State, Ronan Guckian of Fine Gael (November 26th) wants to know, “Will we ever see the memorials to Lord Nelson and King William back on the streets of Dublin again?” If this is the best that the main opposition party in Dáil Éireann has to  offer in holding this Government to account, then we are in bigger trouble than many of us imagined. – Yours, etc,
