Sir, - The authorities in this country certainly seem to be taking to heart the piece in the old Catechism about the good being permitted to suffer while the wicked prosper.
As Fintan O'Toole has pointed out in his excellent article (August 1st), the innocent will underwrite the wrongdoers. How long more must the unfortunate taxpayer continue to foot the bill for incompetence, ineptitude and possible skulduggery?
Surely the legal costs now levied against the taxpayer (on top of the massive tax fraud already perpetrated, and the huge EU fines) must be the last straw. Is there no redress in this so called democracy? Is anyone accountable? Is it any wonder that crime is widespread and that cynicism is rampant? - Yours, etc.,
