Madam, - The irony of handing over $5 million to the former president of Mozambique Joachim Chissano as part of the Mo Ibrahim good governance award cannot be lost (October 23rd). Are we really saying that the best way to stop corrupt African politicians indulging in corrupt practices is to offer them a bribe? While Mr Chissano should be held up as an example for other African leaders to follow, we must not think for one minute that this award will do anything to stop the rot that dominates African politics.
This just proves that Goal's constant advocacy against corruption for the last 30 years has been justified. We need serious action to tackle corruption, not prize ceremonies and back-slapping for politicians who are an exception from the African norm. The international community must stand up and confront corrupt leaders. Only then will the real causes of Africa's persistent poverty be addressed. - Yours, etc,
JOHN O'SHEA, Goal, Dún Laoghaire.
