To restrict the right of Irish people to travel while simultaneously encouraging inward tourism would be perverse, hypocritical and totally impracticable. - Yours, etc,

Madam, - Robert Aaronson (September 17th) makes a good defence of the aviation industry, but its perception of "the needs of society" must be questioned.

While much progress is being made in lessening environment damage, low-cost airlines are offsetting that by encouraging us to make umpteen journeys all over Europe.

I'm reminded of central heating advertisements of not so long ago showing inhabitants romping around in the skimpiest of clothing. Now we are being told to "turn down the thermostat". How long before we are being asked: "Is your flight really necessary?" - Yours, etc,
