Madam, - I am completing a book about the relationship between Ireland and the British monarchy, and I would be very grateful to hear from anyone with clear memories of how the abdication of Edward VIII in December 1936 and the coronation of George VI in 1937 were regarded in Ireland.
I have researched the official records of the time, but as there were no opinion polls in this period, I would very much like to know what the "unofficial" attitude was to these events. I would be grateful for any personal recollections, either named or anonymous, hostile or friendly.
I would also like to hear of any interesting recollections of the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953, specifically with reference to attitudes in Ireland.
- Yours, etc,
MARY KENNY, The Reform Club, 104 Pall Mall, London SW1Y 5EW.
