Appointing an ombudsman

Madam, - I refer to Tony Quinn's question (April 10th) on why there are no "open and transparent procedures" for the appointment of an Ombudsman.

For the avoidance of doubt, as they say, I would point out that, in the case of the Pensions Ombudsman, the Minister for Social and Family Affairs exercised her power of appointment by means of an open competition, conducted on her behalf by the Civil Service and Local Appointments Commission. The position was advertised in this and other newspapers. - Yours, etc.,

PAUL KENNY,

Pensions Ombudsman

designate,

Dublin 2.
