Sir, – I am bemused by all the goings-on regarding postal votes (Home News, September 1st). I would like to have postal voting rights, period, as on any given day of any year there’s a fair likelihood I may not be within reach of my local polling station.
My local council retains a register of electors, which it updates annually by sending someone round to my house to check that my husband and I are still resident and that our respective voting rights status has not changed (I am an Irish citizen, he is a UK citizen). Why is there not a box for “Postal vote Yes/No” against my name on the register, which can be updated annually, ensuring that I can vote by post for whatever elections happen to occur in a given year? This would save endless administration at every election, and ensure a far greater proportion of the electorate has the opportunity to vote. – Yours, etc,
